It's reported they drove with him secured to each car and at one point a vehicle stopped causing one of his arms to be torn from his body. Sonny was found deceased and alone in the middle of a road. The death certificate lists "Ruptured Heart & Lung. Severe Blow to Chest".

Sonny's family divorced prior to his death and he stayed with his dad Earl Warren Andrews in Hughes Springs, Texas. Earl was married to Sonny's step-mom, Mary Lee Andrews. Sonny was reported have been at a party with classmates and declined a ride home, saying he would rather walk.
