On 12/30/1964 at approximately 9:45 am, the Killeen Police Department received a call about a deceased female located at the 800 block of Harris Ave.

Circumstances of Offense:
December 30th, 1964 The murder occurred between 7:45 AM and 9:45 AM. The victim was identified as Army Wife Mary Carlene (Nee. Ice) Letterman who at the time was 16 years of age. The location was a converted duplex and the neighbor was awakened by a baby crying. The neighbor noticed the back door and screen were open and she walked into the house after calling for Mary. The neighbor located the baby next to the decedent alive with no injury. The baby was quickly removed and the neighbor ran out into the street and screamed for anyone to call the police station for response. Further investigation revealed Mary was beaten and a towel was forced down her throat. There was no evidence of sexual assault, although she was found with her nightgown pulled up over her stomach. No property was missing and there was no struggle. Mary's husband, Jerry Letterman (US Army) was stationed at Fort Hood and was considered a prime suspect. He was charged with the murder however on 05/29/1965 he was "No Billed" by the Bell County Grand Jury after only circumstantial evidence was presented. Although several leads were investigated the case remains unsolved.
Additional Details:
Mary was from Claremore, Oklahoma, and had one child with her husband. According to neighbors, Mary was considering divorcing her husband before her death. The surviving child was taken into custody by relatives.
