Summary:

Bible John is the moniker given to an unidentified serial killer who is believed to have murdered three young women in Glasgow, Scotland, between 1968 and 1969. The perpetrator has never been identified and the case remains unsolved and one of the most extensive manhunts in Scottish criminal history.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

Patricia Docker, 25, Jemima MacDonald, 31, and Helen Puttock, 29, were all killed in Glasgow in 1968 and 1969 after visiting the Barrowland Ballroom in the east end of Glasgow. Patricia went to Barrowland in the city's Gallowgate on February 22, 1968. Her naked body was found the next morning on Carmichael Lane, just a few hundred yards from Langside Place. All three women were beaten, raped and strangled with their own stockings. On August 15, 1969, Jemima McDonald, a 32-year-old mother of three, spent the night dancing at the Barrowland. The next day, Jemima's sister Margaret heard rumours in the area that young children were seen leaving an old tenement building in Mackeith Street in Bridgeton talking about 'the body'. By Monday morning Margaret was so concerned that she visited the old building, where she found Jemima's body. On 31 October 1969, a man walking his dog discovered the body of 29-year-old Helen Puttock behind a tenement in the Scotstoun district. Her body was found beside a drainpipe in the back garden of her Earl Street flat. The most detailed testimony came from Jean Langford (née Williams), Helen Puttock's sister, who shared a taxi ride with the couple after leaving the Barrowland Ballroom on October 30, 1969. Jean recalled the man introducing himself as "John," engaging in discussions about religion—quoting Bible verses such as references to the "wages of sin"—and football, while maintaining a courteous demeanor.

Additional Details:

This unidentified serial killer became known as "Bible John" due to his having repeatedly quoted from the Bible and to have condemned adultery while in the company of his final victim. His crimes were followed by the largest police operation in the history of Glasgow. Over 100 detectives worked the case, collecting over 50,000 statements and questioning 5,000 suspects to try and identify the killer. He is between 25 and 30, between 5 ft 10 in and 6 ft tall, has light red hair, good features, blue-grey eyes, and a smart modern appearance. Additionally, all had been menstruating at the time of death and had their sanitary towel or tampon placed upon, beneath, or near their body. This led to speculation that the women had been murdered for their refusal to engage in intercourse with their murderer, due to their periods. Some have speculated that the convicted serial killer Peter Tobin may have been Bible John. Tobin has since been eliminated as a suspect by police. As a result of a police investigation named Operation Anagram, which was initiated in 2006 to trace the movements of Tobin throughout the decades and to determine his potential culpability in any other crimes, a woman informed investigators she had been raped by Tobin after she had met him at the Barrowland Ballroom in 1968, shortly after the first of the murders believed to have been committed by Bible John. However, Operation Anagram found no other evidence to support the theory that Tobin was Bible John. Bible John simply disappeared once his murder spree had ended, never to be heard from again. Who he was, why he did what he did, and why he stopped remain mysteries to this day.
