Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Anthony was last seen in Atlanta, Georgia on November 14th 1971. He lived with his family in the Harris Homes, a former housing project located at 1023 Sells Avenue at the time. Anthony lived with his older siblings, his mother, and his stepfather. Anthony’s thirteen year old brother shared a bunk bed with him in 1971. He last saw the boy getting into the top bunk to go to sleep. His brother slept through the night and didn’t hear anything amiss. When he woke up, Anthony was gone. Police originally believed Anthony had run away from home despite his young age. They investigated the possibility that he traveled to Hickory, North Carolina where his father lived since he told his sister he was heading there. However, Anthony never arrived in North Carolina and no one from his dad’s family ever saw him. Sometime after his disappearance, Anthony’s sister received a call from someone identifying themself as Anthony. He reportedly stated he was staying in a place on Mead Road in Decatur, Georgia but an investigation turned up no trace of him. Anthony’s family never believed he had run away and believed someone had abducted him. Police suspect foul play in the case.
Additional Details:
Witnesses last saw Anthony speaking with a cab driver near his home on the morning after his disappearance. The man was an ex-boyfriend of Anthony’s mother who lived in Jackson, Georgia at the time. The witnesses saw the man hand Anthony fifty cents but it’s unclear whether or not he entered the vehicle. Investigators checked the Jackson area for any signs of Murrill with no results. The cab driver was questioned about Anthony’s case and initially agreed to take a lie detector test but later refused to cooperate. Police called him their primary suspect. He never faced charges in relation to the case. Anthony’s brothers have stated that their stepfather, Edward Groves was violent and had once stabbed their mother. A neighbor once claimed they saw Murrill entering a car driven by Groves but they later recanted. Groves has not been named as a suspect in the case but Anthony’s siblings theorize he could be involved. They think he might’ve sent Anthony away to live with his relatives in order to cause the boy’s mother anguish but this hasn’t been proven. No charges have been filed against anyone in connection with Murrill’s disappearance which remains unsolved.
