Circumstances of Disappearance:
Rita left her residence on Horton Road in West Linn, Oregon at 7:15 p.m. on June 29, 1973 to go for a walk. She never returned. She was last seen between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. that day, walking uphill on Sunset Avenue. There were also reports that Rita was seen on E Main Street of Oregon City near the Oregon City Arch bridge at 9:30 PM. Rita has never been heard from again.
Additional Details:
Investigators pursued multiple leads over the years, including potential sightings as far as the Oregon coast. Investigators have looked into several potential offenders, including Ted Bundy and Warren Leslie Forrest; the former claimed he was not responsible for her disappearance. Bundy reportedly confessed to murdering two women in Oregon, but never told police their names. These women are believed to have been Rita and Vicki, but this has never been confirmed. In early January, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office partnered with the Clark County Sheriff's Office in Washington, to take a closer look at suspected serial killer Warren Forrest — though the sheriff's office stops short of calling him a suspect in the case. About two weeks after her disappearance, her father wrote to The Oregonian, expressing his raw grief: "I cannot describe to you the depth of our heartbreak."
