Weaverville, California

Summary:

Michael Hudson disappeared from his family’s home near Weaverville, California during the summer of 1973. He wandered away from his yard in a rural area and has not been seen since. It’s suspected he got lost somewhere in the terrain surrounding his family’s home and perished due to exposure. He has not been located to date.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

Michael was last seen in the Trinity Alps on July 26th 1973. He lived with his parents in their mining claim cabin located in Barney Gulch, a tributary of the North Fork of Trinity River 20 miles northwest of Weaverville. He was playing on the property with the family’s 90 pound German Shepherd named Barney just after 6:00 pm. His father turned away from him for a few minutes and when he looked back, both Michael and the dog were gone. Barney eventually returned to the cabin without the child. He was out of breath as if he had been running. His parents searched the area before contacting authorities to report his disappearance. Despite extensive searches of the area surrounding his home and the Trinity River, no trace of little Michael was ever found. Police and others searched the area for ten days straight until calling off the search efforts.

Additional Details:

While police suspect that Michael died due to misadventure, his parents and others suspect he might’ve been abducted. A few hours after Michael disappeared, blood hounds were brought to the area to assist in the search efforts. The dogs managed to trace the boys scent to a county road 200 yards away from the cabin where the trail stopped. It’s possible Michael entered a vehicle at this location. In November of 1973, a couple called Michael’s parents and reported seeing their missing son in the company of an unidentified middle aged man in Sacramento, California. A composite sketch of the individual was created but he has not been identified and it’s unclear if he had any involvement in the case. Michael’s parents continued to search the areas surrounding their cabin for years following their son’s disappearance but were never able to find any trace of him. Sadly, Michael’s disappearance remains unsolved.
