Ian Malcom Mackintosh was 20 years old in September 1974. According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, he was last seen in Redding, Shasta County, on Monday, September 9, 1974, hitchhiking on his way to Washington state. On Tuesday, September 10, 1974, he was found deceased along northbound Interstate 5 near the Abrams Lake exit, just north of the city of Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County, roughly 60 miles up the interstate from where he was last seen. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office determined his death to be a homicide. No arrest has been made. The case is one of several unsolved homicides from the 1970s and 1980s in which a person last seen hitchhiking in Redding was later found dead in Siskiyou County; the Sheriff's Office lists each of them separately and has not publicly stated that they are connected. In February 2025 the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office published its Unsolved Siskiyou website, which lists this case among the office's open homicide investigations and asks the public for information. The case remains open.
