She was one of nine children that died in a house fire that was purposely set and where gasoline was used as an accelerant. Her father was initially arrested but, was later released. No one has ever been charged in the murders of the children

The home was her grandmother’s where a babysitter who was 14 was left to watch the 8 other children while the grandmother went to the store. The other victims were six month old Donna Jean Brown, Anita Brown age four: Wanda Jean Brown, 23 months, Vicki Ann Brown, seven years, and the only male victim of the fire, Richard Andrew Brown, age five. 14-year-old Elizabeth Dunn, five-month-old Virginia Ann Thomas, Ella Jean Core, a three-year-old female, and her five-year-old sister Evangle Core
