Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Offense:
Katherine was last seen on June 2nd 1976 in Dix Hills, New York. She left school with two friends and hung out with them until the two girls parted ways with Woods. They last saw her at the corner of Arbor Lane and Caledonia Road at 5:30 pm. This was a short distance away from her home located at 8 Redwood Drive but she never returned home that day. When Kathy failed to get home for dinner, her mother sent her older sister out to look for her but no one was able to find her. They filed a missing persons report the next day.
Additional Details:
On June 5th 1976, a family who were bicycling down Sweet Hollow Road near Jericho Turnpike in Huntington discovered Kathy’s nude body wrapped in a canvas sheet and dumped along the narrow road lined with mostly trees. Woods was the victim of a violent homicide. She was raped, her genitals had been mutilated, and her throat was slashed. She ultimately died from asphyxiation due to being forcibly gagged about 24 hours before her body was found. Police believe Kathy was abducted by someone while she walked home and was held captive for two days before being killed. No credible suspects have been identified in the case and Kathy’s murder sadly remains unsolved.
