The case remains unsolved.
Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Monigold was last seen at a friend's apartment complex in the 3900 block of Old Bullard Road in Tyler, Texas on June 17, 1979. He had been on a date that night and he and his date had gone to his friend's second-floor apartment and fallen asleep on the floor. Between 1:00 and 1:30 a.m., Monigold's friend woke him up to tell him that the dome light in his car, a blue 1978 Monte Carlo, was on. Monigold went outside to turn the light off and never returned. While he was gone, his friend was in the kitchen, which overlooked the parking lot; the car was thirty to forty feet away. His friend didn't hear any unusual noises. After about five minutes he went outside and called for Monigold, but Monigold was gone. The Monte Carlo's driver's side door was found unlocked and there were no indications of a struggle. Monigold left all his clothing and personal belongings behind, and he also left money in his bank account.
Additional Details:
At the time of his disappearance, 23-year-old Barre was working as a car salesman at King Chevrolet. Notably, he studied karate and so knew how to defend himself if ever attacked. On March 18, 1980, Gylie Glen Wilbanks was held without bond. An arrest was made, but polygraph tests on Wilbanks lead to his release when polygraph experts in three cities concluded the suspect had no first-hand knowledge in the man's disappearance. A host of claimants firmly maintained that Monigold had been murdered by Paul Woodward and that his body was secreted beneath the foundation of one of the newly constructed homes on the shores of Lake Tyler where Woodward had been operating as a builder. Barre's girlfriend had an abusive ex (Paul Woodward), who was stalking her and ultimately murdered her. There was an application for probate as early as 1981 implying a declaration of death had already been made, which is unusual only two years after a disappearance unless there is evidence to support the finding of death. In January 2007, Tyler police continued to investigate the disappearance of a Tyler man in 1979. Officials said "We have recently worked on his case" and "We actually talked to suspects in jail that we know were around during the time frame and try to get information from them."
