Circumstances of Offense:
Avis was last seen in Detroit, Michigan on February 27th 1981. She left her residence located in the 3200 block of Pingree Street at 4:00 pm and never returned. Her mother reported her missing at 10:15 pm that night and believed she might’ve been staying away from home due to losing her glasses. She might’ve feared being punished as a result. Police said in news reports that Avis was a chronic runaway. There were reports that Avis had been seen in her neighborhood in early March 1981, after she had been reported missing.
Additional Details:
On May 5th 1981, two men were cleaning out a garage behind a house located in the 4000 block of Columbus Street. Inside the garage was a car that had been stored there for five years. Upon opening one of the doors of the car, the two men discovered the badly decomposed body of a young girl. The house was occupied by two women who were sisters and eight children. The father of the two women previously owned the property until his death on January 30th 1981. The house was vacant when Avis went missing and it’s believed she was in the car before they moved in. The two women said they heard no noises from the garage. Due to the state of her body, no exact cause of death could be determined.
