Edith LaRiviere, age 31, was living with her husband Charles LaRiviere and their children at their home on Cider Mill Road in North Brookfield, Massachusetts. Her children were told she had walked out after a late-night argument on May 18, 1981. She walked away from her home and has never been heard from again.

Edith LaRiviere was 31 and living with her husband Charles LaRiviere and their children at their home on Cider Mill Road. Her children were told she had walked out after a late-night argument on May 18, 1981. Charles told the children he had watched her walk up the street until he could not see her anymore and he figured she would be back, but as the days passed and she did not return, police began investigating. Police investigating were told that she had simply left home, which seemed odd because she had five young children at home. She did not take her car, and for some time after her disappearance, her purse hung on the back of her bedroom door in its usual spot.
Additional Details:
Edith was an EMT, and her daughter Christa Tuft remembers that she was often away answering ambulance calls. There were suspicions about Charles, but no one was ever charged in connection with the case. Court records show Charles divorced her about a year later. Charles divorced Edith about a year after she disappeared, but the divorce came after he had already remarried. His children discovered that he and his second wife both listed the marriage as their first when they wed in New Hampshire in late 1981. Their stepmother Melanie LaRiviere was placed in charge of the house and there was no talk of Edith. Photographs of her were removed and their memories of their mother faded. Charles owned and operated Bay State Remanufacturing, which was listed as having its headquarters at the home on Cider Mill Road. He ran the company for 30 years until he retired. When Charles died from Lou Gehrig's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in 2008 at 58, his obituary contained a line that said he was "predeceased by his wife Edith (Stapins) LaRiviere in 1981." In 2006, his second wife Melanie filed for divorce, and court documents show Charles was living in Monaco at that time. In their probate court file sits a letter, returned and unopened for more than 15 years, from its destination in Monaco. Over the years, there has been some additional investigation into the case, but no resolution.
