Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Offense:
On the evening of April 8, 1981, Caroline Harris-Reed, a 22-year-old student, had travelled from her home in Buckinghamshire to South London to stay with a friend named Catherine, a student nurse. Caroline's friend was nervous about being alone in her new flat on South Lambeth Road in Stockwell, and Caroline thought the short visit would be a good opportunity to look for a summer job. On the evening of April 8th, the two women were waiting for a mutual friend to join them in the flat when a violent intruder burst through the door, threatening them both at knifepoint. After a harrowing approximately two-hour ordeal, the intruder fatally stabbed Caroline multiple times in the chest. He also sexually assaulted her and mutilated her body, cutting off her right breast. Caroline would have died within seconds from the stab wound to her chest. The intruder then fled into the night. Caroline's body was found lying on its back on the bedroom floor. Her friend, Janet, survived the attack but was severely traumatized.
Additional Details:
Pathologist Ian West conducted the medical examination and confirmed that Caroline would have died in seconds from her injuries. Detective Chief Superintendent Jerry Plowman led the investigation and warned the public that the man could strike again. Police created two artist's impressions (identikits) of the perpetrator and released them to the public, but very little news coverage occurred publicly about the case in the months following the murder. Caroline's murder was mentioned in a national petition together with five other brutal killings of women that had occurred in recent times. On April 10, 1981, just two days after the murder, a 21-year-old man named Frank Harvey walked into Clapham police station on unrelated business. While there, police officers noticed he had a nose similar to the one described by the survivor. Harvey was subsequently brought in for questioning and eventually identified by Janet as the man who had killed Caroline. In November 1981, Harvey was also connected to an attack on an 18-year-old woman named Emily. In May 1982, Harvey was put on trial for Caroline's murder at the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales. The sole issue in the trial revolved around identification by the survivor, Janet. The jury was not informed of the separate charge relating to the attack on Emily. The trial lasted seven days. Justice McCowan presided over the proceedings. Harvey maintained his innocence throughout the trial. The jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict, and Justice McCowan offered a retrial which was scheduled for September 1982. On October 29, 1982, Harvey admitted to indecently assaulting Emily in November 1981, but he was not convicted of Caroline's murder. As of recent podcast episodes about the case, no one has ever been brought to justice for Caroline's murder. The case remains unsolved.
