In the early morning hours of April 9, 1982, R&D Security Agent Scott Michael Rodgers responded to a burglary alarm at Solid Gold Men’s Wear #2, located at 209 East Avenue C, Killeen, Texas. Upon arrival, Rodgers observed signs of forced entry and may have encountered a suspect inside or nearby. He gave chase on foot, pursuing the suspect westbound through the area. The pursuit ended in the 400 block of North 8th Street, where Rodgers was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the face/neck. His issued .38 caliber Taurus revolver was missing, and witnesses reported seeing a white male suspect fleeing the scene. Rodgers was transported to Darnall Army Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Blood trails and physical evidence connected the scene of the burglary to where Rodgers collapsed. The incident is believed to have occurred during Rodgers’ attempt to apprehend a burglary suspect, resulting in his being shot at close range.
