Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

James Edward Lewis, of Fayetteville (Cumberland County), North Carolina, left home on October 3, 1982 in a white Ford Fiesta, NC license THP 821. He told his family that he was going to Vero Beach, FL to interview for a job ferrying Piper airplanes from the dealer to buyers. Jim Lewis was a recently-retired major with 25 years in the US Army -- a Ranger, founding member of the "Golden Knights” U.S. Army Parachute Team, a highly-decorated and wounded Vietnam veteran, a skilled pilot with commercial and seaplane ratings, as well as a dedicated husband and father. He was an especially courageous soldier who proved his willingness to risk his own life and limb for others. Please read The Only War We Had by Michael Lee Lanning for a detailed account of Jim Lewis’ bravery in battle and exemplary leadership. It was his habit on trips away from home to stay in phone contact with his wife; however, after his October 3 departure, he did not call home. In January 1983, Ms. Lewis received a call from a parking-lot attendant at the Fayetteville Municipal Airport informing her that the Ford Fiesta had been parked in the long-term lot since October 6. “Jim” Lewis, a Texas native born in Malakoff and raised in Waco, was declared legally dead in 1992. However, his remains were never found. Jim Lewis was 42 years old at the time of his disappearance, making him presently 79 years old. He is a white male; five feet, ten inches tall, with a husky frame; and at the time of his disappearance, was 214 pounds. He had close-cropped hair, brown mixed with gray. His eyes are brown, and he has shrapnel wounds to the right side of his chest, right forearm, shoulders, and upper back. If you have any information, please contact Detective Patrice Bogertey the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department at (910) 321-6416 or by email at pbogertey@ccsonc.org.
