According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, he was last seen on January 11 or 12, 1983 at an interchange in Redding, Shasta County, where he intended to hitchhike north to Oregon. On Sunday, January 23, 1983, he was found deceased in a rural area near Fort Jones, in the Scott Valley of Siskiyou County, well off Interstate 5 and about 100 miles north of Redding. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office determined his death to be a homicide. The Sheriff's Office carries the investigation under a criminal case number and a separate coroner's case number.
