Offense Location:

Woodstock, Oxfordshire

Summary:

Eila Karjalainen was a 23-year-old Finnish nursing student who was hitchhiking in the UK to sightsee. Her body was found on November 25 in dense woodland at King's Wood on the Blenheim Palace Estate near Woodstock. Her cause of death was ruled as strangulation. Eila's murder still remains a cold case to this day.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

Eila arrived at Harwich on August 2, 1983, and was planning to see as much of England as she could by hitchhiking her way around during a two-week holiday before she started a course in mental health nursing. On August 7 she was last seen walking along the A40 near London, likely aiming to reach Oxford. She never made it to her return flight back to Finland on August 14. Her family reported her missing and a search began, but no immediate leads surfaced. Her body was found on November 25 in dense woodland at King's Wood on the Blenheim Palace Estate near Woodstock. The remains were partially buried under undergrowth and heavily decomposed. She was found naked except for her socks about 300 yards from a road covered with leaves by a palace gamekeeper. Lying near her badly decomposed body was a pair of light-coloured slacks, a t-shirt, and a pale green coloured elasticated canvas shoe. It took several weeks to identify her. Her rucksack and belongings including her passport were found in a layby on the A40 near Barnard Gate, near Witney, three weeks after her remains were found.

Additional Details:

One key piece of evidence early on in the investigation was Eila's diary. Throughout her travels in the UK, Eila had written down the names of the people she had met on the way, as a form of memento of the holiday. When this was found several pages were ripped out. Fingerprints were subsequently taken from the backpack and other items such as tickets. In October 2000, advances in forensic technology allowed the police to lift fingerprints from Eila's travel documents and diary. These prints were strongly suspected to be those of her killer and were run through the police national database, but as of 2023, no match has been found. In 1987, police investigating the murder of 17-year-old Rachel Partridge, who had been murdered while trying to hitchhike back to her home at Shaw's Field Farm, looked into whether there could be a connection between Partridge and Eila's murders, but found no links between the two cases. In 1984, someone anonymously contacted police claiming to have found her purse and anorak in the area. They never came forward again, despite police appeals. The items they claimed to have seen were never recovered. In later years, retired detectives began linking the case to other unsolved murders and to known offenders. One name that surfaced repeatedly was Christopher Halliwell, a taxi driver later convicted of murdering two young women. Halliwell was only 18 at the time, and no forensic evidence ever placed him near the scene. Police have never named him as a suspect and there has been no public progress tying him or anyone else to the murder. No arrests were ever made.
