Summary:

An unidentified man was found drowned on a beach in Ambleteuse, France on September 9, 1984. He had been in the water for approximately three months. Despite extensive investigations and a 2024 television documentary featuring facial reconstruction by Dundee University experts, his identity remains unknown.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Recovery:

On Sunday, September 9, 1984, the body of a man in his 30s was discovered on the beach at Ambleteuse, a village six miles northeast of Boulogne in northern France. Based on the condition of the remains, police estimated his body had been in the water for approximately three months, suggesting he likely entered the water around June 1984. The man had drowned. Forensic oceanography analysis indicated that he likely entered the water south of Ambleteuse, as ocean currents run northward in that area.

Additional Details:

The man's body was originally buried in an unmarked grave at Ambleteuse cemetery. In 2022, the body was exhumed on March 31 to investigate a potential connection to George Johnston, a man who had vanished off the Norfolk coast in England in August 1984 while attempting to rescue a family in distress. However, DNA testing showed no familial relationship between the remains and George Johnston's family. Following the exhumation, experts from Dundee University, led by Dr. Toby Houlton, created a detailed facial reconstruction of the man's skull using CT scans from the original French autopsy. Dr. Houlton initially produced black and white images before adding hair, eye, and skin color details based on further DNA analysis. The case was featured in the Channel 4 documentary series 'The Body Detectives,' which aired in July 2024, investigating efforts by the charity Locate International led by former detective Dave Grimstead. The facial reconstruction images were circulated in French media in hopes of identifying the man. One woman in France made contact after seeing the reconstruction, but the case remained unsolved as of the documentary's broadcast.
