Summary:
Carolyn Elaine Pruyser was an 18-year-old University of Alberta student who went missing from Peace River, Alberta on May 17-18, 1984. She disappeared while driving home on Kaufman Hill Road after dropping off a friend following a Stanley Cup Final game. Her abandoned car was found on a steep embankment with her purse and keys still inside. She has never been found and foul play is suspected.
Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
On the evening of May 17, 1984, Carolyn went with friends to watch the Edmonton Oilers beat the New York Islanders 7-2 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final. Around 11:55 pm, she and a friend visited the Twelve Foot Davis Centre (which housed a submarine shop and convenience store) in downtown Peace River and purchased a pack of DuMaurier Filter cigarettes. The two were also captured on security footage at the convenience store. Carolyn then drove her friend, Leanne Naturkach, home to the south side of Peace River. Around 12:10 am on May 18, 1984, she dropped her friend off and continued driving her father's blue 1978 Ford Fairmont up Kaufman Hill Road toward the family home just northeast of town. She was last seen at a Mohawk service station in Peace River shortly after midnight on May 17. Approximately 10 minutes later, a passing driver spotted the Ford Fairmont abandoned on a steep embankment on Kaufman Hill Road near a spot where local youths often partied. At 7:00 am on May 18, Carolyn's father, Kees Pruyser, discovered the car parked on the side of the road facing northbound. Her purse was on the driver's seat, the keys were missing, and the driver's side window was rolled halfway down. A boot print was found on the driver's side door, but there was no indication of a struggle.
Additional Details:
RCMP believed foul play was suspected from the beginning and classified her disappearance as a stranger abduction. RCMP and civilian volunteers launched an extensive search and held check stops in the area where the car was found on Kaufman Hill Road early on May 18, 1984. A suspect was identified after RCMP released CCTV video footage showing both him and Carolyn in a television broadcast that aired in August 1984. The man was in the same submarine shop and convenience store at the same time Carolyn visited both locations before she disappeared. He became a formal suspect after being questioned by police in 1985 and 1987. The suspect has denied any involvement in Carolyn's death, stating he was driving a brown Oldsmobile Cutlass on May 17, 1984, not a black pickup truck as reported. He claims his family has been destroyed by being targeted as a suspect. Some theorists believe a retired RCMP officer may be responsible based on circumstantial evidence and personal investigations. Hunters in a remote area northeast of Manning found a fresh grave in June 1984, just weeks after Carolyn's disappearance and about 167 kilometers away, though no confirmation has been made regarding this grave. Her remains have never been found despite extensive searches. Albert Cooper, the Peace River Member of Parliament when Carolyn vanished, stated he believes the perpetrator is "someone Carolyn knew or trusted." Carolyn's father, Kees Pruyser, died in 2006 without ever learning what happened to his daughter. The case remains open and active with RCMP who have declined to provide details. Carolyn's family and friends established a Facebook group in her memory to support other missing persons cases. The Carolyn Pruyser Friendship Awards scholarship was established in her name to honor her memory. Carolyn was known for her command of French and her lovely smile.
