Summary:

Deborah Wolfe a Registered Nurse was last seen in the parking lot of the Fayetteville Veterans Medical Center about 4 PM Thursday December 26 By a female from volunteer services. She was seen in the Mintz Pond Neighborhood with a cleancut tall muscular male companion about 6 PM. She failed to report to work at 8 AM December 27,1985. She was found by scuba divers in a 55 gallon rusty burn barrel in the pond near her cabin January 1, 1986.

Circumstances of Death:

The official case reports this as an accidental drowning. Case closed. Deborah's mother Jenny Edwards believed she was kidnapped, raped, murdered and dumped in her pond. Jenny believed that Debbie was being stalked by one or two volunteers from the VA hospital. They were described as persistent romantic suitors. Debbie was said to have been harassed by phone. Jenny stated she thought one of these men had mental problems. She went on Unsolved Mysteries and stated that theory. Information that Debbie died at a house party was totally disregarded by Debbies mother and Law enforcement.

Friday, January 03, 1986 05:01am

The barrel dissapeared and Jenny lambasted Law Enforcement in the press. An announcement was made that no barrel existed. It was the field jacket ballooning underwater. Debbie's death was pronouced an accidental drowning. Sheriff Ottis Jones asks the NC SBI to review his case and procedures. The family has a second autopsy. Debbie is buried in Louisiana. The battle in the press continues to this day.

The pond is drained under the supervision of Cumberland County Sheriffs Department. No barrel, discernable drag marks or tracks are found. Dr Oliver performs the state autopsy.

Debbies dogs were fed in the morning. Kevin Gorton and "Gordon Childress" arrive and prepare to search the Pond. Childress enters the water at 3PM. He announces he found two sets of tracks and drag marks. A few minute later he finds Debbie in a burn barrel. LE is informed they recover her dressed in an unusual manner in a mixture of mostly men's clothes. The barrel was left in place. The scene was not secured overnight.

Debbies dogs were fed. Cumberland County Sheriffs department arrived in the morning and conducted a search. Bloodhounds were said to have been used. As the search was winding down Jenny asked if they were going to search the pond with a boat. It was almost dark New Years Eve. After a discussion Jenny was allowed to use her own divers.

Debbies dogs were fed. Sometime that day She was reported missing to the Cumberland County Sheriff's department. They arrived late in the afternoon as another search by family and friends was ending. According to one account they couldn't find the place until late and informed the family they would return in the morning.

Debbies dogs were fed in the morning. According to one account a search was conducted late morning or early afternoon until dark. Fifty or more people are said to have participated. It was organized and supervised by Jenny, Debbies mother and Steve McDonald, Debbie's boyfriend.


Friday, December 27, 1985 11:00am

Inside was an ashtray with cigarette butts. Her purse was wedged in a difficult to reach place in her waterbed. Various personal items were out including photos. Debbie was meticulously neat and a non smoker. Law enforcement was called. Reactions vary in different accounts. 1. The family was told they couldn't report her missing for 72 hours. 2. A deputy responded but couldn't find the place. 3. Captain Jack Watts arrived in late afternoon and conducted a cursory search with a bloodhound.


Friday, December 27, 1985 08:00am

Debbie fails to show for her shift (8AM-4PM) at the veterans hospital. Call are made to her home and her parents home. Her mother Jenny, Her stepfather John "Sarge" Edwards and a family friend Kevin Gorton go to her cabin. They become suspicious when they saw several things out of place. Debbies car was not in its normal place and the drivers seat was all the way back. Beer cans of a brand she didn't drink littered the yard. At least one dog was unchained. Only one door was locked.

Debbie accepted an invitation to a house party. She invited Jimmy and his tall blonde female companion (not his wife) to her home enroute because she had a couple of things to do. She was last seen driving her car with her "date" followed by by Jimmy Miles and his date in his new 5.0L dark mustang convertible. This was after dark 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

Debbie arrives at house in Mintz pond. Debbie was wearing ladies jeans or slacks and a dark tank top or t-shirt. Her tall muscular male companion was military style clean cut with brown hair and smooth arms. They were freshly showered. He was roughhousing with her. She was described as liking the attention but not the treatment and it was described as a minor spat. The "host" Jimmy Miles put them though the sleep hold. Debbie was slow to recover but very impressed.

Debbie calls her mom Jenny for advice on a birthday present for a sister-in-law just before her shift ends. This was the last time they spoke according to Jenny. She is last seen exiting the hospital into the parking lot by a female volunteer staff member.

Debbie reported for work (8AM-4PM). She was seen with a large stuffed unicorn. She had lunch with Respiratory Therapist Roger Rushing. He spilled coffee on her sleeve, she spilled peas on the front of her top. Debbie probably handwashed and dried her top in the ladies room prior to returning from lunch. She had experience at quick, effective clean up from working at the Pub.

Christmas: According to most accounts Debbie worked her shift (8-4) then celebrated Christmas with her family. No specific information of who was there or the time she left for her cabin.

Christmas Eve: Normally the family gathered at their family business The Pub in the basement of Eutaw Village shopping center to wish friends annd customers Happy Holidays. No information whether this took place, who participated is available.
