On June 29, 1985 31 year old Linda Shawn Casey with her beautiful corkscrew auburn tinted curls & porcelain skin was preparing dinner for her boyfriend after finishing up with work. Shawn, as she preferred to go by, had worked part time for the electric shock coalition a Wichita-based consumer group fighting the proposed Wolf Creek electric rate increases. She was there from 130 until 345. Her boyfriend calls at 4 pm to confirm dinner. That’s the last person to speak with Shawn. Evidence shows that Shawn was in the midst of preparing dinner when she was interrupted. Shawn had just celebrated her 31st birthday the week prior & was on the verge of earning two college degrees and after working so hard for 12 years she was so close to getting everything she ever wanted. Police suspect Shawn’s killer had spent time in her east Wichita apartment that Saturday on June 29. They also believe this killer had experience in butchery. This was written in a Wichita Eagle article in 1985. The police however didn’t explain why they thought that. There was no forced entry to her home. There is a front entrance as well as a side entrance. Yet no forced entry on either. On June 29, 1985 on the afternoon at 356 N Spruce someone had gagged Shawn Casey, bound her hands behind her back. The killer had brutally stabbed her repeatedly in the back, abdomen & her vaginal area. They had smashed her face & head with a wine bottle. Investigators deduced she used the wine bottle to prop to keep her bedroom window open. The killer pulled the telephone line taut with his bloodied hands, then slashed the line with the same blood soaked knife. The knife had become bent from the assault. Investigators say butcher knife used came from Shawn Casey’s own knife set. Now in a Wichita Eagle article friends & family argued that Shawn Casey never owned a butcher knife of that sort because she only ate chicken. But looking back at what we know now. Those knives automatically come in sets. The knife may have been there. But with Shawn not being a steak eater or wielding such a large knife family & friends never would have had occasion to see it. Thinking back to the phone cord of course makes us all reflect on BTK & I’m sure police have as well. There is no way they would have not run the dna in this case or questioned radar about this case. The killer had washed up in the bathroom. Either he was not aware however that the sink wasn’t used because it had no drainpipe and would overflow and drip downstairs into the basement apartment. So to me this rules out someone well acquainted at least with the residence. Downstairs neighbors had begun to bang on the ceiling at 530 pm to complain about leaking water through the ceiling. Now it’s worth noting. They didn’t complain of any load screaming or sounds of a struggle. It wasn’t until the dripping water that they complained. The killer had removed a pair of pants that Shawn Casey’s boyfriend had hanging in the closet. Removing his own probably to conceal blood stains. However, he must have taken The clothing with him because none were found on scene. At 6 pm warren and Cynthia perry stopped by to see whether Shawn had been able to obtain tickets to an upcoming top petty concert. That they had discussed only hours earlier. Shawn had said her boyfriend would be coming over for dinner & she was going to try to get tickets so they could all enjoy the concert. The Perry’s began banging on Shawn’s window when there was no answer. They thought it was odd that something was covering the bedroom window because Shawn was meticulous about light reaching her plants. But after trying everything to call out to Shawn for approximately 10 minutes they gave up. Little did they know the killer could have still been on the other side of the door at that time. Watching. Waiting, were they going to leave? Be his next victims? Or was he caught? So when they decided to leave it could have saved their lives Or could have caught a killer. That one question we will never really know the answer to. When Randall Babbitt, Shawn Casey’s boyfriend, finally arrived home just before 8 pm he was not prepared for what waiting for him. He arrives in the apartment to find Shawn’s body in a corner of their bedroom, the wine bottle that had been used to prop open the bedroom window to provide a cool breeze has staged grotesquely on her body. She has been so mutilated he could not even recognize that it was the same woman he had kissed goodbye earlier in the day. Shock, terror, & disbelief washes over him. Now, remember, the killer had cut the phone wire. Now one of the questions I have is there were tenants that lived above and below in other homes, but will get back to that. so Bobbitt gets in his car and he drives to the corner of Hillside and Central and goes to a payphone inside the local spangles. That’s been a question. Why would he drive there to call 911 instead of running to a neighbor. For Randall Bobbitt, it was a simple answer, he was in shock, he went to spangles because Shawn loved their salad bar, he went to the familiar to something Shawn loved. remember Bobbit had seen something extremely disturbing. He gets on the payphone to call 911 and when he had spoken to them unfortunately he gave them the wrong address but he still in a state of shock. He goes back to the house to wait for the police and he’s not aware of the fact he’s given them the wrong address. So after about 15 to 20 minutes of waiting Bobbitt is like where the hell are the police? This time Bobbitt goes to a neighbors house & calls 911. When Police arrive to investigate they are able to determine that the killer had not just killed Shawn. Police suspect Shawn’s killer had spent some considerable time in her east Wichita apartment on that Saturday. They noted there was no forced entry yo either door and wonder if Shawn knew the person who if they had come to the home under guise such as gas man or other worker. Shawn had been sexually assaulted as well as her body mutilated. The killer exhibited a lot of rage towards Shawn. The items used on Shawn were from around her own home. Not things a killer brought with him. The killer used Shawn’s butcher knife to stab her, until it was bent. He cut the phone cord after there was blood on his hands. So he stopped what he was doing to cut the phone line. Was the phone ringing? Was the noise interrupting his fantasy? He had to have Shawn under control at that moment to leave her, bloodied to cut the phone line. Then there’s the wine bottle. Used to prop the window open to catch cool breezes on a June day. Did that wine bottle catch the wrong persons attention. Could the person have been able to come through that open window? Is that why the wine bottle is used so often on Shawn? Did he hit her with the wine bottle first?could he have already been in the house via the open window. Wine bottle in hand waiting for Shawn. After she finishes chatting with her boyfriend & turns to make dinner that’s when the assault begins? She was struck by the wine bottle to the head & face. Could that have incapacitated this strong young woman enough in a blitz attack for him to then bind her hands & gag her. He then with bloodied hands cuts the phone cord & returns to his torment of Shawn Casey. He sexually assaults her & begins to butcher her. The Friday night before Sean died Randall Bobby had stayed over a friend who stopped by about 930 found a pair watching Miami Vice Sean‘s favorite TV show Bobbitt stayed until 1 PM Saturday on 1 PM on Saturday. He goes home to fix his mothers faulty, hot water heater, and Sean. She goes to her meeting when you called Sean about 4:30 PM to confirm their dinner plans. He had no reason to believe that evening wouldn’t be like any other evening they’ve shared together. Linda Sean Bullock was born on June 22, 1954 in Tulsa where she lived until she was 10 her family moved to Cushing. We’re her mother had grown up and lived there for six years. When her parents divorced Sean return to Tulsa with her mother after three years of pre-law studies at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma Sean married her brother’s classmate a Wichita artist named Sean Casey the third and moved back to Casey’s home town in 1975 a year after they were married. Three years later, the marriage fell apart. after an initial period of estrangement Sean room exhumed a close friendship with her first husband who now shares a Kansas City apartment with her brother Greg Casey last saw Sean on Father’s Day June 16 when he in a girlfriend stopped by her apartment he was questioned this week by police who have been checking the alibis of dozens of Sean‘s friends, Sean‘s mother said Chuck Casey had cried all night son Sunday and all day Monday police have spent the past week questioning dozens of Sean‘s, family members and friends trying to piece together a motive, a clue, a relationship anything that might make anyone want to kill someone described as a person who had enemies. Also interviewed with Sean second husband, Ronald, Keith, Thomas and unemployed Wichita bartender how much she divorced in June 1982, after three year. She was also married to a bartender named Thomas briefly . Sean had been enrolled at Wichita State University, taking courses in anthropology and philosophy. Her advisor said she would’ve graduated in December. One professor described her as engaging and an enlightened thinker. She was capricious and vibrant. She was buried in her grandmothers, high, necked ivory dress, her throat frame to buy an extra collar she wore on a scarlet ivory dress She loved jazz, polar bears, gardenias & French racing bicycles. She baked cookies for neighborhood kids, quoted John Paul Sartre & adopted stray cat. She loved nothing more than spending time with friends over Chinese dinners. She had played the flute & twirled a flaming baton in her high school band. She was the type of woman who transformed weed patches into clusters of zucchini & tomatoes. She dreamed of going onto archeological digs in South America. She would braid red, gold, & green Christmas ribbons on her Christmas packages to give them that special “Shawn” individual touch t was that detail, and the fact that Casey was a WSU student, that started rumors that her murder was tied to BTK. Authors even mentioned her case in books about the serial killer. But police say Dennis Rader is not responsible. "Due to the victim’s demographics and, you know, everybody wanted -- when you couldn’t figure out immediately who did it -- they wanted to say, ’well what about BTK?’ said Detective Heather Bachman, Wichita Police Department. Soon after the murder, police had some leads but those have all gone cold. Now, nearly 21 years later, the case is still open and detectives are not giving up hope. "A lot of DNA evidence that -- back in 1985 we didn’t have the ability to take that and process it -- that we have been in the last year working on but haven’t gotten any hits off of that," said Det. Bachman. DNA hasn’t panned out but a tip from the public could be the clue that puts a killer behind bars. "If there’s somebody that might know anything at all about this case, it would be a great relief, I think, to her family -- certainly to her friends -- and if they could come forward and help us bring this to some closure," said her friend. They are hoping for a tip that might bring a conviction and give family and friends peace nearly two decades later. "It would make it, at least in my mind, easier to remember the person she was and not focus on the person that died and how she died," said her friend. "It would just be a whole lot easier to help her rest in peace." Police say with this much time passed it might be a long shot but they are hoping, 21 years after Linda Shawn Casey’s murder, someone that was hesitant to talk about the killing will open up now. "Maybe as they age, you know, they realize the importance of being able to go to the family of this victim and explain to them that we have finally made and arrest," said Det. Bauchman. "If it were my daughter or son, I’d want to cooperate any way possible." "What happened to Shawn and that anxiety of not knowing is really tough. It’s difficult to live with because you’re never sure if you’ve done everything you could have done to try to bring some resolution to the case," said her friend. Called boyfriend around 4 pm while making dinner. Neighbors banged on ceiling around 530 due to water running into apartment. Friends stopped by apartment between 5-6 pm to discuss concert tickets. Window that is usually open was covered. No one answered door. They knocked at window for 10 minutes with no answer. Boyfriend arrived home around 8 pm to find Shawn Casey’s nude body brutalized, posed, & phone cord cut.
