Mark Mellick, 35, was last seen during the late evening of March 13, 1985, at Scotty’s Tavern in Mansfield, Ohio, where he ate pizza and had drinks with a female acquaintance. He left the tavern around midnight. In the early morning hours of March 14, 1985, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Mellick was brutally attacked and beaten with a blunt object. He suffered fatal blunt force trauma to the head, resulting in a subdural hematoma. Later that morning, after he failed to arrive at his business, Lehr Awning Company, an employee went to check on him and discovered his body inside the fenced area of his yard. Investigators found a trail of blood leading from his truck and evidence indicating a violent struggle had taken place. His death was ruled a homicide.

Authorities learned that Mellick was involved in a relationship with a married woman, though investigators have indicated that other motives may also have played a role.
