Summary:
Barbara Walsh (née Lydon) was a 33-year-old mother of seven who disappeared from her home in Rusheenamanagh, Carna, County Galway, Ireland on June 22, 1985 after a family gathering. She was last seen asleep on the sofa at approximately 4:00 AM. Despite extensive Garda investigations, reviews, and searches conducted over decades, she has never been located.
Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
The 33-year-old held a party in her house on a Friday night, 21 June 1985. She was last seen at her home at 4am the following morning. Her husband Dara had welcomed his brother home from Australia on the night of June 21st, 1985, with a night out in a local pub. Most of those in the pub came back to the house, and local residents who remember the night in question say those invited included several gardaí and the priest. Her daughter Jacquie was aged 14 at the time and woke during the night and went downstairs. She tried unsuccessfully to wake her mother before leaving her to sleep downstairs on the sofa. When the family awoke that morning and Ms Walsh was gone they initially assumed she had gone out with their father, Dara, on his bike to nearby shops, as he often did on Saturday morning. Garda files indicate that no official report of her disappearance was recorded until June 29th, a full week later.
Additional Details:
An Garda Síochána are following more than 100 new lines of inquiry into her whereabouts as they conduct extensive searches of her family home and surrounding lands at Ruisín na Maithníoch (Rusheenamanagh), in Carna. A full case review into Ms Walsh's disappearance was carried out in 2015. A series of planned searches took place in the area of Ruseenamanagh by gardaí with the assistance of the Garda Technical Bureau and a cadaver dog from the UK and also a forensic anthropologist. Her family and the gardaí believe she was murdered at the time of her disappearance and her body disposed of to conceal the crime. MacDara Walsh died in 2007. Gardaí stated: "We have no evidence to suggest she was murdered… but we are satisfied from our inquiries that Barbara didn't have a passport and that she hasn't travelled abroad. There has been no evidence of her living in Ireland either, but without a body we can't say for certain whether Barbara is dead or alive." Gardaí are also liaising with Interpol, but have not found any information that would indicate that Ms Walsh left the country.
