Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

Tina Marie Stensaa was 17 years old in February 1986. According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, she was a runaway from Washington state who was living in Weed, California, and was known to hitchhike. Her family has said she ran away from home and hitchhiked to California. She was last seen leaving her house in Weed on Thursday, February 13, 1986. On Friday, February 14, 1986, she was found in critical condition in the roadway under the southbound Interstate 5 overpass on Weed Boulevard. She was taken to the hospital, where she died of her injuries. Her family has said that she was found by a passing motorist and that she was not identified until July 1986, when her wallet was found. The Weed Police Department, which has jurisdiction over the city, carries the investigation under its own case number, with the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office assisting under a separate agency-assist case number. The Sheriff's Office lists her death on its Unsolved Siskiyou website as an unsolved homicide. No arrest has been made. In October 2021 a relative started an online petition asking that the case be reopened; the petition states the family's belief about who may have been responsible, but no law enforcement agency has publicly named a suspect, and no one has been charged. The case remains open.
