Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

On September 11, 1988, the body of an unknown female was found floating in a farmer's irrigation ditch near the 6000 block of Goldfield Rd., Colorado Springs, CO. The next day, the body was identified as belonging to Towana Lewis. Lewis was approximately three months pregnant at the time of her death and had another young daughter. Her autopsy determined her cause of death was a result of asphyxia due to ligature strangulation. The manner of death was homicide. Lewis' body was not decomposed, therefore, she had not been in the water for a long period of time. However, her body may have been there for as long as 36 hours. Her body was fully clothed except for shoes. The toxicology revealed the presence of cocaine in Lewis' system. Lewis was last seen alive on September 9, 1988, possibly at Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs.
