Randy Charles Spring was a 28-year-old Army veteran and volunteer firefighter who disappeared while on a solo hiking and camping trip in the Whitewater area of Riverside County, California on October 10, 1988. There was a possible sighting of Spring between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. on the day of his disappearance at the base of the San Jacinto mountains, but he has never been found. His case remains unsolved.

Circumstances of Disappearance:

Spring was last seen when he was dropped off by a family member in the vicinity of Tipton Road and White Water Road in Whitewater, California at 6:30 a.m. on October 10, 1988. He said he was going hiking and camping for a few days and would hitchhike back home or call his family for a ride. He was last seen wearing camouflage pants, a dark blue t-shirt and an Army-Green jacket. Randy was carrying an Army-Green Backpack at the time he disappeared and it contained some food in Tupperware containers. He was reportedly seen again at the base of the San Jacinto mountains between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm, October 10, 1988. Searches by law enforcement and private sources resulted in no trace found.

Additional Details:

Randy Spring was a US Army Veteran working for the California Department of Forestry at the time of his disappearance and had been working towards becoming a career firefighter, completing the courses in his area prior to his October 10th disappearance. Randy had survival training in the Army and worked for California Dept of Forestry. He was also a volunteer firefighter for Bostonia, CA fire dept. When nobody had heard anything from him after 10 days, the authorities were notified and he was reported as missing. An extensive search of the surrounding area turned up no sign of him.
