Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

Basil was last seen in Richmond, Virginia on April 16th 1990. He disappeared with his seven year old brother, Jamal Abdul’Faruq. Their stepmother dropped them off at their mother’s home at the Palms Apartments located at 1704 Clarkson Road after a day of visiting Byrd Park with their father. The two boys went outside to play in the front yard at 2:35 pm. Their mother worked the night shift at her job the day before so she went inside to sleep. When she woke up from her nap, she looked for her two sons but she was unable to find them. Police searched the apartment complex and nearby wooded areas extensively but found no trace of them. Police believe the two boys were abducted by someone while they played outside on the afternoon of their disappearance. No one ever saw them again afterwards. Both boys were students at E.S.H. Elementary School at the time.

Additional Details:

On April 19th 1990, a landfill employee found Basil’s body in the Shoosmith Brothers Inc landfill in Chesterfield County, Virginia at 1:20 pm. An autopsy indicated he was killed by two stab wounds to the back and his skull was fractured postmortem. He had been bound and gagged. Investigators spent four days searching the landfill for any trace of Jamal but he was not found. Nonetheless, police suspect he was murdered with his older brother shortly after their abductions. The parents and stepmother of both boys were investigated for potential involvement in the case. A search warrant was served on their father’s home located in the 3900 block of Alma Avenue in Henrico County, Virginia but nothing was found. Their mother and father were ruled out as suspects in the case. In 1991, police stated they believed they knew who abducted and killed both boys but declined to publicly identify the suspect but sources stated it was someone who knew both the brothers. Sadly, Jamal’s disappearance and Basil’s murder remain unsolved.
