Summary:

Early in the morning on May 14, 1991, thirty-four-year-old Kathy Page was found dead in her car which was stuck in a ditch in an apparent car accident near Vidor, Texas. As investigators looked more closely, however, they found evidence to suggest that her death was no accident. The autopsy determined that she had been strangled. Page was named the prime suspect days after Kathy's killing and Chief Carroll says Page remains so today. The case remains unsolved as of 2026.

The authorities learned that in the days leading up to the incident, Kathy had asked Steve for a separation. He had moved his things out of the house and lived elsewhere. Steve, who claimed to have not known about the affair, told the police that Kathy had asked him to watch the kids that night. He added that they had sex the same night, after which he said Kathy left around 11:15 pm. The investigation revealed that Kathy left the hotel in Beaumont at about 2:30 am on May 14, 1991, with her body being found mere hours later. On a warm, partly cloudy night in Vidor, Texas, a newspaper boy, up early for his route, noticed that a black 1991 Mercury sedan was pitched forward in the ditch just off Interstate 10. The ditch was located between West Bolivar and the freeway access road. He immediately called the police to report the vehicle and that he was pretty sure there was a body in the front seat. Her feet were pushed back to the seat rather than stretched toward the pedals. Finally, even though she wasn't wearing her seat belt, she remained in a reclined position in her seat. She had a broken nose and black eye. There were blood stains on her underwear and skin, but not on her outer clothes. Authorities believe that she was killed in another location; she was then cleaned up, dressed, and placed in her car. The autopsy also showed that Kathy had engaged in sexual intercourse shortly before her death. Instead, she had spent the night with a boyfriend in a motel in Beaumont, ten minutes from Vidor.

Witnesses testified that he was left-handed; the autopsy determined that Kathy had most likely been strangled by a left-handed person. The autopsy report also noted that whoever Kathy had sex with that night had had a vasectomy. Her boyfriend had not had one, meaning that she had sex with another person that night. Authorities discovered that Steve had had a vasectomy a few months earlier. Her mother, Dorothy, testified that she had seen Steve vigorously washing clothes on the morning after her murder. The following day, her family witnessed him cleaning the carpet in their home. He claimed that he had spilled grease on it. Fulton won a civil suit in an Orange County district court against Steven Page, his daughter's husband, in 1999. The jury members checked 'yes'. The judge ordered Page to pay court costs and $261,780.82 in damages to Fulton and his wife. Steve Page was later convicted of repeatedly desecrating Kathy's grave. Page was named the prime suspect days after Kathy's killing and Chief Carroll says Page remains so today. Page's estranged husband, Steve Page, was not indicted or convicted of murder. The signs went on to inspire the Academy Award-nominated movie, 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,' and drew the attention from other productions including 'Unsolved Mysterious' and 'Cold Justice.' In 2021, on the 30th anniversary of her murder, Kathy Page's parents joined the Vidor Police Department to announce a $50,000 reward through Crime Stoppers of Southeast Texas for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for her death. At that time, Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll said 'another piece of the puzzle' had been obtained using DNA testing. They had 2 daughters, Erin Michelle Page (1979-) and Monica Nicole Page (1983-2011).
