Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Offense:
On the evening of January 21, 1993, Lori rented a movie and headed to her boyfriend’s house. When he wasn’t there, she spoke briefly with his sister, mentioning back pain and her plan to return home. Around 8:15 p.m., she left. Her parents, Mack and Opal Hill, had gone out that night. When they returned around 9:15 p.m., they found Lori’s dark blue Oldsmobile idling at the end of their gravel driveway, headlights on. At first, they weren’t alarmed—it wasn’t unusual for Lori to sit there listening to music, waiting for them to get home. By morning, Lori’s car was still in the same spot. The driver's side window was rolled down, the battery had died, the ignition remained in the "on" position, and her purse was inside. Lori was gone. A massive search effort followed. Jones County Sheriff’s deputies, volunteers, and even helicopters scoured the Leaf River and nearby woods for weeks. But it wasn’t until February 10 that two men stumbled upon Lori’s body behind a shed in a remote field off U.S. Highway 49 in Collins—over 20 miles from where she was last seen. She had been strangled. Officials declared it a double homicide—Lori and her unborn daughter both murdered.
Additional Details:
Tire tracks were found near the body, possibly from a small pickup truck. But no murder weapon. March 1993, Lori’s body was exhumed to collect forensic samples. Then again in June, when her engagement ring—a one-third carat diamond solitaire—was revealed to be missing. February 1995, Lori’s ring resurfaced. It had exchanged hands several times but was traced back to its original jeweler by markings on the band. Around that same time, a witness came forward, describing a tall, slim man with a Cajun accent seen with Lori’s acquaintances the night before she vanished. Still, no arrest was made. Jones County investigators submitted evidence in March 2023 to Astrea Forensics in hopes that advanced DNA technology might crack the case. As of May 2025, Cold Case Investigator Thad Windham continues urging anyone with information to come forward
