Summary:

Annie Bridget McCarrick, born March 21, 1966, is an American woman from Long Island, New York, who went missing under suspicious circumstances on March 26, 1993, while residing in Ireland. On March 24, 2023, Gardaí upgraded the investigation to a murder inquiry. In June 2025, a 62-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder and thereafter released.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

On Friday, March 26, 1993, Annie spoke to both her flatmates before they left separately to travel home for the weekend. Annie had made arrangements with friends inviting them to her apartment for dinner the following day, Saturday, March 27, and was excited and making plans for her mother Nancy's impending visit to Ireland the coming week. A receipt confirmed the date and time of purchase as 26/03/1993 at 11:02am at the Quinnsworth supermarket on Sandymount Road, which was the last confirmed activity of Annie McCarrick. She did some shopping at Quinnsworth supermarket before returning to her apartment at 3:00 pm. She was seen on a bus at about 3:40 pm in Ranelagh heading toward Enniskerry. Some time later that evening between 8 pm and 10 pm, the doorman at Johnnie Fox's pub in Glencullen claims to have seen McCarrick at the pub accompanied by a young man who was wearing a wax jacket. Allegedly, McCarrick had gone to see an Irish music and dancing show, a traditional event called the Hooley Show, but did not realise that there was a cover charge. Annie was reported missing by a friend at Irishtown Garda Station on the evening of Sunday, the 28th of March, 1993. This missing person report was confirmed by her mother Nancy when she arrived in Dublin on Tuesday, the 30th of March, 1993.

Additional Details:

CCTV captured images of McCarrick in the Allied Irish Bank location in Sandymount, where she was seen withdrawing money from her bank account. However, a year after her case was upgraded to a murder investigation a new Garda investigation team determined that the grainy CCTV footage of the 26-year-old in her local AIB branch in Sandymount was in fact captured on March 15th that year, not March 26th, 1993. On March 24, 2023, two days before the 30th anniversary of McCarrick's disappearance, Gardaí stated they had upgraded the investigation to a murder inquiry. They also announced that they had identified two men of interest in regard to McCarrick's disappearance and that these two individuals had lived near her in Sandymount. In April 2025, it was revealed that Gardaí had interviewed one of two brothers at a hospital in France where he was receiving treatment for a long-term illness. It had also been established that McCarrick had confided in friends that she had been having trouble with a man, who had previously struck her. In March 2020, it came to light that a woman named Margaret Wogan spotted a woman matching the description of Annie McCarrick, in Poppies cafe in Enniskerry on the Friday afternoon that she went missing. According to Wogan, McCarrick was accompanied by a man with a "square face". Private investigators now believe that this is a vital piece of information in the McCarrick case. A year after Ms McCarrick's disappearance, her father, John McCarrick, offers a reward of $150,000 for any "serious information leading to her whereabouts or to her location". He died in 2009. June 1997: A search of a pet cemetery in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, is carried out following a tip-off, but her body is not found. The Garda cold case investigation uncovered a litany of errors in the original investigation. This was particularly since her family and friends sent several faxes in the aftermath of her disappearance, stressing how she was having significant difficulties with a young man whom she knew well. On the morning of 12 June 2025, Gardaí arrested a 62-year-old man at his home in Co Meath on suspicion of McCarrick's murder and thereafter released him. The search for missing American Annie McCarrick concluded after gardai confirmed they have found "nothing of evidential value" at a West Dublin property.
