Teresa was 27 when she was beaten, her throat was slashed, and she was thrown into the water near Davis Island Yacht Club, in one of Tampa’s most upscale neighborhoods, She had 5 children. 3 sons with her ex-husband, Farid Shafii, who moved to Iran the year following Teresa’s murder. She had a son (1991) and a daughter (1992) with Michael Alfonso, now deceased. Her murder received no media coverage besides a paragraph identifying her. I don’t think her death was investigated at all.

Circumstances of Offense:
Her body was found by a dog walker in approximately 3 feet of water in Seaplane Basin, just north of the Davis Island Yacht Club near the seawall, abutting Peter O. Knight Airport. At the time, it was reported that investigators suspected that she was killed in the field near where her body was discovered. The field is now Seaplane Basin Park. No further investigation is known.
Additional Details:
Teresa, was better known by her nickname, Reese, like the candy. Probably because she was a very sweet person. Unfortunately, she was experiencing difficult circumstances. Originally from Tarboro, North Carolina, she moved to Tampa in 1985 and married her husband, Farid Shafii, July 26, 1985. Together, they had three sons. Shafii (D.O.B. 10/06/1959) filed for divorce February 1990 and it was finalized in July 1991. She told people he’d taken away her children and there was no hope of getting them back. Shafii was accused of sexual battery in March of 1992 and a warrant was issued for his arrest in September of the same year. He subsequently moved to Iran and his warrant was recalled with no prosecution in July of 2020. At the time of her death, she and Michael Afonso, had recently broken up. There is nothing to suggest his involvement in her death. There is no evidence this murder was ever investigated. Mike told people, that when the police delivered Reese’s death notification, one of the policemen referred to her in disrespectful and derogatory terms. This case doesn't appear anywhere as open, closed, solved, or otherwise. An online form requesting information regarding this case was submitted, but none was provided. The body of woman found floating near a sea wall on Davis Islands Thursday morning was identified as Teresa Carlen LeBarron, 28.
