Summary:

D’Wan Sims disappeared from Livonia, Michigan during the winter of 1994. His mother claimed he had vanished from a shopping center after he wandered off but security tapes from that day contradicted her story entirely. Police believed she might’ve known more about what happened to her son but she always maintained that he disappeared from the mall. Sadly, his case remains unresolved.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

D’Wan was last in Livonia, Michigan on December 11th 1994. He was with his mother, D’Wanna Harris at the time of his disappearance. She told police that she took her son shopping with her at the Wonderland Mall that day and that he vanished while they were walking in the corridor between the Target store and the main area at 2:30 pm. An extensive search took place for the boy but no trace of him was found at the mall or any surrounding areas. It was initially feared he might’ve been abducted so police investigated everyone who knew the boy. His father was questioned and ruled out as a suspect early on in the investigation. Police questioned people who were at the mall that day and checked surveillance footage as well. Witnesses did report seeing D’Wanna enter the mall at 3:00 pm alone. This was a half hour after she claims he vanished. D’Wan also never showed up on the surveillance footage.

Additional Details:

Police stated they did not believe D’Wanna’s story and felt she was hiding something. She maintained her innocence in the case and never changed her story about the mall. D’Wanna’s mother, Beverly said she did not believe her daughter had anything to do with the boy’s disappearance. Beverly had taken out a $25,000 to $50,000 life insurance policy on D’Wan at some point before he went missing. She couldn’t remember the exact time she took it out. Beverly said she also planned to take one out on D’Wanna and her other daughter. There’s no evidence that it had anything to do with his disappearance and Beverly stated the money was going towards D’Wan’s college education. In the days following his disappearance, police searched areas between his mother and grandmothers homes for any evidence of his whereabouts but none was found. Police have called D’Wanna a possible suspect in the case but she always maintained her innocence. She died in 2020 while living in North Carolina. D’Wan has never been found. His family hopes he is alive but investigators suspect he might be deceased. Sadly, his disappearance remains unsolved.
