Summary:

Revelle Sabine Balmain, a 22-year-old model and dancer originally from Port Stephens, has not been seen since November 5, 1994, when she mysteriously disappeared from the Sydney suburb of Kingsford. An inquest in 1999 found she died at the hands of a person or persons unknown to her. Deputy State Coroner Joan Baptie has found her escort agency bosses lied to police, with evidence concluding they knew what happened.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

At 4pm on the afternoon of 5 November 1994, Balmain, who worked as an escort under the name of "Mischa", visited a client in the south-eastern Sydney suburb of Kingsford. After the two-hour appointment was over she had planned to meet friend Kate Brentnell for a drink. At 7.15 pm Revelle rang Kate Brentnell to say that she was about to leave her client and suggested that they meet at the Royal Hotel, Paddington. She did not keep that appointment. It was later revealed that Balmain had gone to the Kingsford house, on McNair Avenue, to visit a client. The client denied he was involved in Ms Balmain's disappearance, telling police and an inquiry he had dropped her at the nearby pub and then gone home, watched television and fallen asleep. No one from the Inn ever saw her. Her mother reported her as missing right away. The following day, Revelle's bag, shoes, make up, diary, credit cards and the keys to her flat were found scattered around a Kingsford suburb.

Additional Details:

An inquest into the 1994 disappearance of Revelle Balmain has been told a witness heard a high-pitched scream and screeching tyres on the night the Sydney woman went missing. Ms Balmain, a 22-year-old model and dancer originally from Port Stephens, has not been seen since November 5, 1994. After a couple of fruitless weeks of searching, the New South Wales government offered a reward of $100,000 for anyone who could provide information that would lead to the arrest of Balmain's killer. As of 14 May 2021, the reward stood at $1,000,000. In 2008, forensic evidence suggested that Balmain was murdered in her final client's house. In July 2021, the police announced they had obtained new crucial information. This included a blurry photograph of a man wearing sunglasses and a white T-shirt, seated at a wooden table. Following this lead, police identified a new individual potentially connected to the case and conducted raids on three separate premises. This prompted New South Wales Deputy State Coroner Joan Baptie to initiate a second inquest, which commenced on April 29, 2024. At the time, Ms Balmain was working part-time for an escort company known as Select Companions, which was run by owners Jane King and her husband, Zoran Stanojevic. The inquest heard evidence from Ms King that Mr Stanojevic had alleged links to the "Yugoslavian mafia". Judge Baptie criticised both of their evidence relating to what they knew and when. The evidence showed on the night Ms Balmain vanished, she stood up clients and friends of Zoran Stanojevic with links to "Yugoslavian organised crime". Ms King said when Ms Balmain was not available Zoran was furious she was uncontactable and did not attend because he had talked up Ms Balmain. The deputy state coroner said Ms King concluded her husband "would have taken it as personally that she had not turned up". The case has been referred to the Unsolved Homicide Unit for further investigation.
