On May 21, 1994, Fred Joe Walking Badger and Aaron Leland Rivers Sr. were working on a church in District 5 located in the Gila River Indian Community. This was the last confirmed sighting of both individuals. One month after their disappearance, the vehicle they were riding in was found burned in the Gila River area. On December 15, 1999, the remains of Fred Joe Walking Badger were discovered and subsequently identified through dental records.
