Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Phillip John Koss was last seen on March 12, 1995, at approximately 5:30 p.m. leaving the vicinity of the 400 block of Van Buren Street in Fort Myers, Florida, where he resided at the Mental Health Halfway House. Witnesses reported seeing him leave the group home in the evening hours. He left behind all his personal belongings at the facility, suggesting no planned extended absence. Twelve days later, on March 25, 1995, his red 1991 Geo Metro sedan was discovered abandoned in the Meadows subdivision on Longmeadow Boulevard in Sarasota, Florida, approximately 75 miles north of Fort Myers. The vehicle's location was significant as it was near the home of his mother, Louise Morgan, in Sarasota. His wallet containing his identification and personal items was found inside the vehicle, but there was no sign of Koss. He has never been heard from again.
Additional Details:
Koss was a gifted individual who graduated from Pine View High School and pursued higher education at the University of Florida, where he studied music and mechanical engineering and played the violin in the Gainesville Chamber Orchestra. After suffering a nervous breakdown, he moved into a Fort Myers group home for mental health support. Law enforcement noted that Koss had never made contact with his mother despite his vehicle being found near her home. Several unconfirmed reported sightings of Koss occurred in the Fort Myers and Sarasota areas during 1995 and 1996, but none were ever verified. In 2007, police investigated whether Koss might match any of eight skeletons found in Fort Myers, but no match was determined. His mother Louise Morgan has remained convinced throughout the decades that her son is alive, attributing this to 'mother's intuition.' The case has benefited from renewed attention through missing persons organizations including The Charley Project, the Doe Network, and NamUs. The Fort Myers Police Department continues to list the case as active and remains open to new information. Some internet forums have speculated about a possible connection to Grateful Dead concert tours in the East in March 1995 based on his known aliases 'Ace' and 'Wolf,' but these remain unconfirmed theories.
