Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Sally Ann John was working on the streets as a sex worker between the bus station and train station in central Swindon on the night of September 8, 1995. She was last seen at approximately 10:50pm on Alexandra Street (also described as the junction of Station Road, Aylesbury Street, and Alexandra Road). A woman matching her description was seen looking at train timetables at Swindon railway station early in the morning of September 9. Her father revealed that all of her belongings remained in her flat at Kimmeridge Close in Nythe, Swindon, indicating she did not leave of her own volition. Police initially conducted a high-profile missing person inquiry that ran until December 1995, but Sally Ann was never found.
Additional Details:
For many years the police treated the disappearance as a missing person case. However, following a review of the original investigation in 2013 and the discovery of significant new information, the case was reclassified as a murder investigation in November 2014. Wiltshire Police became confident that Sally Ann was likely murdered following her disappearance. In September 2015, three men were arrested on suspicion of kidnap and murder: two men aged 50 and 52 from Swindon, and a 52-year-old from Chippenham. All three were later released pending further inquiries. In 2015, forensic teams searched Sally Ann's former flat at Kimmeridge Close, using blood dogs and ground-penetrating radar equipment, though no findings were revealed to the public. The case remains an ongoing investigation. In March 2017, Wiltshire Police revealed that a postcard had been kept in evidence for over 20 years; it arrived in Swindon three weeks after her disappearance, appearing to have been sent by Sally Ann from London. However, handwriting analysis determined the postcard was forged and not written by Sally Ann, suggesting it may have been created by her killer to make her family believe she was still alive. Halliwell was investigated as a potential suspect but is no longer linked to the case. Sally Ann's mother, Lesley John, has made emotional appeals for information over the years, stating she still thinks of her daughter every day and hoping to find closure.
