Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Maria Dolores Rosales Pacheco, known as Lola or Lolita, was a 31-year-old Hispanic woman living in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California. She was employed at Valley Fresh Inc., a food processing plant in Turlock, California. In approximately June 1996, she had separated from her husband. On July 7, 1996, Pacheco visited friends in the neighboring city of Ceres, attended church in Modesto, and shopped at a Walmart store. She returned home at approximately 11:00 p.m. and made a phone call. Before going to sleep, she asked a friend to call her at 4:00 a.m. to wake her so she could complete household chores before her work shift. At 4:00 a.m. on July 8, 1996, her friend called as arranged. No one answered. Pacheco never appeared for her shift at Valley Fresh Inc. and made no contact with her employer. She never collected her final paycheck. Her husband later told police he had seen her at approximately 6:30 a.m. that morning near the intersection of Crows Landing Road and Hatch Road in Modesto, and that she had handed him their young daughter at that time. This account has not been independently corroborated. On July 16, 1996 — nine days after she was last seen — Pacheco's red 1987 Hyundai, which had tinted windows and was missing trim on the rear passenger door, was discovered abandoned in the 2000 block of Seattle Street in Modesto, near where she had last been reported. Her identification was found at or near the vehicle. No trace of Pacheco was found with the car.
Additional Details:
In the days before her disappearance, Pacheco had reportedly opened a new bank account using cash. She had four children. Dental X-rays are on file with California authorities. The Modesto Police Department investigated her disappearance under case number 96-059147 and suspects foul play.
