Bellaghy, County Londonderry (Derry), Northern Ireland

Summary:

On 12 May 1997, Sean Brown, a 61-year-old married father of six and Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) official, was abducted and killed by the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF) in Northern Ireland. Masked men abducted him from outside Bellaghy Wolfe Tones GAA club, hijacked his car and drove him to a spot ten miles away, where they shot him and set the car on fire. Despite multiple investigations, an inquest, and years of legal battles, no one has been convicted of the killing.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

On 12 May 1997, Brown, in his role as chairman, attended a rescheduled Gaelic football match at the club grounds. The fixture delayed the weekly committee meeting, which ended around 11:15 pm. Brown's son left the club at 11:25 pm, while Brown stayed to set the security alarm, lock the clubhouse, and lock the main gates leading to Ballyscullion Road. Brown set the security alarm at 11:27 pm. After moving his red Ford Sierra to the roadside, Brown was assaulted at the gates between 11:32 and 11:35 pm by several masked individuals. He was forced into the boot of his car, which was then driven away in a three-car convoy. The cavalcade drove a further 5.2 miles on the A6 to the start of the M2 motorway near Randalstown. Sean's Ford Sierra car was driven into a secluded laneway running above and parallel to the start of the motorway. He was then dragged from the car and shot and his car set on fire. The blaze was reported at 11.45pm. When the local RUC investigated they found Sean Brown's body with 6 bullet wounds to the head, partially burned from the intense heat, lying behind his burnt-out car.

Additional Details:

On 27 October 2026, the family of Sean Brown, the 61-year-old Bellaghy man murdered by Loyalist Volunteer Force paramilitaries in May 1997, attended the Supreme Court in London. Despite multiple investigations, an inquest, and years of legal battles, no one has been convicted of the killing. Both the Belfast High Court and the Court of Appeal ruled that a public inquiry is required due to state failures to investigate adequately. The original RUC investigation ended in 1998 without charges. A 2004 Police Ombudsman report highlighted critical failures in handling forensics and intelligence. During a 2024 inquest, intelligence linked over 25 individuals, including state agents, to the killing and revealed police surveillance on a key suspect was suspended on the evening of the murder. State agencies (MOD and MI5) withheld material under "national security grounds". In a statement published in the Irish News (17.12.97) the UDP claimed that the LVF carried out the killing, using the same weapon as in the murder of Gerry Devlin at St Enda's GAA Club in Glengormley on December 5 1997. This was never officially confirmed. In 1999 an inquest into the murder of West Belfast taxi driver John Mc Colgan was told that the same weapon had been used in the murder of Sean Brown. The killing was attributed to the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF). The LVF falsely claimed that Brown had campaigned for Martin McGuinness and had been involved in re-routing an Orange Order march in Bellaghy. His family said he was not involved in politics or parade disputes, and was friendly with local Protestants.
