Summary:

Carmel Fenech, also known as Carmel Pendry, was reported missing to Sussex Police on 27 June 1998 at age 16. Police believe she has been murdered, though she has never been found.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

Carmel was last seen at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court in South London on 21 May 1998, with a man. She had been to court to answer a shoplifting charge and was expected home by her family but failed to return. She did not return home and her mother reported her missing the following month. They had lived on the North Peckham Estate before moving to Crawley less than a year before she disappeared and Carmel had many friends in that area and nearby Brixton and Stockwell.

Additional Details:

She had been struggling with a cocaine addiction for several years at the time of her disappearance and was living in a care home. When Carmel was 14 years old she met a 40-year-old Jamaican man who introduced her to crack cocaine. He exploited her along with several other vulnerable underage girls. She was mostly picked up from Crawley by 40-year-old Reynold Malcolm who may also use the name Leslie Malcolm and was known to the drug-using fraternity as "Mikey". Malcolm was questioned by police at the time of Carmel's disappearance but was not charged with anything, he denied any relationship at all. Independent charity Crimestoppers have offered a reward of up to £10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons linked to Carmel's disappearance. Sussex Police said that Carmel's case has not been forgotten and that back in 2015 they had given the case to the serious crimes unit. Further lines of enquiry in London were identified by recent reviews and they have been working with the Metropolitan Police to examine these and pursue them where possible, although so far they have not led to any significant developments.
