Summary:

According to a news release, deputies were deployed to a Subway restaurant where Nick was working and his girlfriend (Stephanie) was waiting for him. Ten months after the horrifying tragedy at Columbine High School, on February 14th, 2000 around 12:37am, fifteen year old Nick Kunselman and his girlfriend, sixteen year old Stephanie Hart-Grizzell were shot to death inside a Subway restaurant just blocks from the school.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

An employee had reportedly driven past the restaurant and noticed that the lights had been left on and stopped to turn them off. Upon entering the shop, the employee discovered the teens' bodies behind the counter. The employee who found them shot also saw a person exit out of the back of the shop: a white man with blonde hair who was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. After further investigation, it was determined that Stephanie and Nick had been shot by an unknown intruder or intruders. Nick was an employee of Subway and Stephanie was at the restaurant waiting for him to get off work.

Additional Details:

In 2021, Metro Denver Crime Stoppers increased the reward in this case to $100,000 for information leading to the arrest anyone responsible for these deaths. The assailant(s) have never been identified despite investigators initially releasing a description of a suspect — a white male, 16 to 20 years old, about 5-foot-7 and 150-170 pounds with blondish hair. This case has little publicity which is believed to be due to the large scale media coverage of the Columbine High School Shootings that took place in the same city less than a year before.
