Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Sarah Benford grew up in Kettering where those who knew her described her as bubbly and confident. At a young age social services became involved as Sarah began skipping school and by the age of eight, she was running away from home. After her uncle passed away, she drank and used drugs as a teenager. She also self-harmed and spent time with adults involved in theft and drug use. She was placed in care as her mother thought it was the best chance of keeping her safe, but it did not. She was recorded as missing for 41 days out of 150 days as Welford House in Northampton where she told staff of having sex with adult men. She ran away from the home on 31 March and on 6 April told her mum she was taking heroin. Later that day she rang her mum from a house on Hampden Crescent whilst high. Her mum phoned police to ask them to pick her up but they refused to 'baby sit' her.
Additional Details:
Sightings around Kettering were reported up until 19 April which the police regarded as credible. In September 2003 Northamptonshire police announced they were investigating her murder and arrested a man but released him without charge. Officers reasoned a 14 year-old with Sarah's needs could not function independently. An inquiry called Operation Yacht was launched. Eight people were arrested at different stages of the investigation but all were released without charge. Major searches were made at Kettering and London also in 2016 and 2022 at Weekley and Wakerley woods.
