Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

Sometime after 1 a.m. on July 17, 2002, 15-year-old Scott Fosnaught and his friend Shawn Baur left a party and were walking home along Cashdollar Road. A passing motorist came across their bodies laying near each other in the road around 1:30-2:00 a.m. Scott was already deceased, having suffered major injuries to his chest area. Shawn was alive but barely conscious with two massive head wounds and was rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Both boys lived in Evans City, Pennsylvania in Butler County. Based on the injuries, authorities believed the boys were struck by a vehicle. Scott's body could have been hit by a car based on his internal injuries. However, it didn't seem likely that Shawn was hit by a car as he had suffered severe trauma to his head with injuries appearing more in line with being struck with a weapon than by a car. If the boys were hit by a car, there were no broken glass, paint chips or skid marks typically found at such scenes.

Additional Details:

The Pennsylvania State Police took the lead on investigating the homicides. The investigation was overseen by the Pennsylvania State Police, who questioned motorists, scouted locations near the crime scene with helicopters, and went door-to-door through the area. They would act upon tips received, interviewing potential persons of interest and analyzing at least ten vehicles, but were unable to find evidence linking them to a potential suspect. There were no skid marks, no broken glass and Fosnaught's blood was detected 184 feet from where he was found. Following their deaths, the two boys were both buried at the Evans City Cemetery, where their mothers spoke at a press conference staged by state police two months later. State police still considers it an active investigation with a $10,000 reward for information. The reward amount was raised to $10,000 within the last year or two. As of May 2026, there was a possible break in the case with investigators narrowing the list of suspects.
