On August 29, 2002, Audrey May Herron completed her shift as a part-time nurse at Columbia-Greene Long Term Health Care Facility in Jefferson Heights, Catskill, around 11:00 p.m. She said goodbye to her co-workers and got into her black 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with New York license plate X233UV. She was wearing dark green medical scrubs, a blue turtleneck, and white sneakers. The weather that night was rainy and foggy. Herron was supposed to arrive home in Freehold, approximately 12-15 miles away, around 11:30 p.m., a drive of about 20-30 minutes. She was driving westbound on State Route 23. A coworker followed her on the same route for about five minutes before turning onto another road. She never arrived home. Her husband reported her missing at 6:00 a.m. on August 30, 2002. The day of her disappearance, Herron had just received a substantial pay raise and had a doctor's appointment scheduled for the next day, which she never attended. Since her disappearance, she has not used her cellular phone or credit cards.

The investigation into Herron's disappearance has been extensive and ongoing. Police say they are treating her case as a homicide. Her husband took a polygraph test and allowed authorities to search their property three times, though some sources indicate he has been characterized as uncooperative. He has never been named as a suspect. No other suspect has been identified. Over the years, investigators have received thousands of tips and leads, ranging from reported sightings (including a claimed appearance on the TV show 'Law & Order') to various theories, but none have proven viable. In May 2016, investigators followed a lead that brought them to Cauterskill Road in Catskill, about 5 miles from where Herron was last seen. The property had belonged to a person of interest serving time for a sexual-related crime. Police drained a pond and excavated ground, but found no evidence. In May 2022, New York State Police sent underwater divers to search three bodies of water in Greene County, including Potluck Reservoir, Mauer's Lake, and a stretch of Catskill Creek, but those searches came up empty. In September 2022, Adventures with Purpose, a volunteer dive team, searched waterways between Greene County and Albany County but was also unsuccessful. Herron's dental records and family members' DNA have been entered into the NamUs database. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has analyzed evidence collected by state police. As of 2022, the case had a new investigator assigned. Her family and friends continue to hold fundraisers and community events to keep the case in public awareness. Herron's oldest daughter, Sonsia Court, who was 10 years old when her mother disappeared, has become a nurse. Both of Herron's daughters have pursued nursing careers in her memory.
