Summary:

On May 24, 2004, the body of Oakey Albert "Al" Kite, Jr. was discovered in the basement of his residence in Aurora, CO. Mr. Kite had been beaten and stabbed. Multiple items were taken from the scene including Mr. Kite's wallet, cell phone and pickup truck.

Circumstances of Offense:

An unidentified male attempted to use Mr. Kite’s debit card at an ATM following the murder. Surveillance video from the ATM shows a male wearing a ski mask driving Mr. Kite’s pickup truck, which was later recovered near Mr. Kite’s residence. Mr. Kite’s cell phone was later discovered in a pay phone booth.

Additional Details:

A male who rented a room from Mr. Kite prior to his murder is the primary suspect in this case. The renter, who identified himself as "Robert Cooper," claimed to be from the East Coast and to work for Wells Fargo Bank. He provided false identification and contact information on his rental application. Witnesses generally described the suspect male as white, in his forties or fifties, 5’10", 170 to 180 pounds, with black or brown hair. Witnesses reported that he walked with a limp and used a cane, and another reported that he spoke with a possible Romanian accent.

May 24, 2004 - Later in that same day, Al’s blue and grey GMC pickup truck was found about a block and a half from his home.

May 24, 2004 -Detective Thomas Sobieski, of the Aurora Police Department, responded to the call and found Al’s body in his basement.

May 24, 2004 - h, Al's absence was noted at work. He was considered a punctual and reliable employee, so his boss got in contact with his sister, who was still residing in the East Coast. She then called the Aurora Police department, and requested that they perform a welfare check on her brother.


Saturday, May 22, 2004

May 22, 2004 - Al drove Linda to the airport. Around 3:30PM when Linda’s plane landed, she spoke with Al on the phone.


Wednesday, May 19, 2004

May 19, 2004 - Al was contacted by “Robert Cooper”. Al told his girlfriend, Linda, about his potential tenant Robert Cooper. Linda did not formally meet Robert Cooper, but briefly saw him in the house and was able to give a description to police.

May 2004 - Al’s tenant moved out. Al listed an advertisement for his basement apartment.
