Summary:
Shirley Mae Hunt, a 72-year-old white female with Alzheimer's disease, disappeared on June 19, 2007, while taking her daily walk on County Road 454 near her home in Good Springs, Rusk County, Texas. Despite extensive search efforts involving over 150 deputies and volunteers, helicopters, planes, and tracking dogs, she was never found and the case remains unsolved.
Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Hunt was last seen walking down County Road 454, half a mile from her home in Henderson, Texas at 3:00 p.m. on June 19, 2007. She went for a walk there almost every day. Children getting off the school bus saw Hunt walking, and after she turned the corner, another man saw her. She never returned home and has never been heard from again, and an extensive search of the area turned up no sign of her. Hunt left behind her purse. Shirley Hunt was last seen wearing a white shirt with black trim, a blue pullover, denim culottes and brown shoes.
Additional Details:
She had alzheimers at the time of her disappearance. Since the day of her disappearance more than 150 Rusk County Sheriffs Deputies and volunteers have searched on foot, 4-wheelers, and by helicopter. On Sunday, a privately owned plane scanned the area looking for signs of the missing grandmother. We actually had a helicopter out, we had trackers out, we had several K-9 units that were out, and Everybody tracked her back to a specific spot and then at that one spot, we lost her. Sheriff's deputies believe she got in someone's car, due to scent dog tracking. Hunt's daughter, Kim Vaughn, said her mother has talked recently about visiting her sister in Amarillo. 'I could easily see her getting in a car and saying she was going to Amarillo,' Vaughn said. 'Most of the time, she would say she was going to Henderson, but about a year ago she talked about "I'm just going to hop a bus to Amarillo."' Authorities believe she may have become disoriented and wandered away or was picked up by a passing motorist.
