On October 27, 2007, at approximately 4:20 a.m., San Diego County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon at 617 Spires Street in Vista, California. Upon arrival, they found Maria O. Martinez, 25 years old, suffering from a gunshot wound inside the residence. She was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. that day. The shooting occurred during a domestic dispute between Marcelino Guzman and his wife. Following the incident, Guzman fled the scene in a white 1990 Ford pickup truck with California license plates 4EJZ639.

Marcelino Guzman's brother, Isidro Cruz, was arrested in connection with the murder and held without bail along with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.
