He told firefighters he attempted to rescue his wife but was overcome by smoke. Firefighters extinguished the fire and discovered an elderly female deceased in the hallway of the residence. The victim was identified as 73-year-old Eleanor Nichols. Fire Department Arson Investigators determined the fire was suspicious and requested the Sacramento Sheriff's Office Homicide Team investigate. The Coroner's Office determined that Eleanor Nichols had been shot prior to the fire being started.
