On December 6, 2009, Susan attended church with her family and was last seen at home that afternoon. The following day, she failed to show up for work, prompting concern. Her husband, Joshua, stated he had taken their two young sons on a late-night camping trip in freezing temperatures, leaving Susan at home. Investigators found Susan's purse, keys, and cell phone in the house, along with a wet spot on the carpet being dried by fans. Traces of her blood were discovered, and a handwritten note expressing fear for her life was found in her belongings. Joshua became the primary person of interest but was never charged. He moved with their sons to Washington State and resisted cooperation with law enforcement.

In 2012, during a supervised visit, Joshua locked out the social worker and set his house on fire, killing himself and their two sons. This act intensified suspicions about his involvement in Susan's disappearance. Subsequent investigations revealed disturbing behavior by Joshua's father, Steven Powell, including voyeurism and possession of explicit images of Susan. He was convicted on related charges. Despite extensive searches, including in abandoned mines, Susan's remains have never been located.
