Circumstances of Disappearance:
On 18 March 2009, Claudia finished a regular morning shift at the University of York and left at approximately 2:30pm, starting a three-mile walk home, which she had been doing for weeks while her car was unavailable. A friend driving past spotted her on Melrosegate and offered her a lift, which she accepted, and she was then dropped off at her cottage in Heworth Road at approximately 2:50pm. A friend later saw her returning home at 3:05pm and there was a reported sighting in between of her posting a letter nearby. She was later spotted near her home and spoke to both of her parents by phone that evening, with her mother describing her as sounding "cheerful and relaxed." The only significant items missing were her mobile phone, a set of hair straighteners and a rucksack which she normally used to carry her chef's whites to and from work. Indications were that Lawrence had left the house normally to go to work at around 5:00 am on the morning of 19 March, but had never arrived. After failing to turn up for her morning shift on Thursday, March 19, 2009, Claudia's manager attempted to call her mobile but did not receive an answer. At 12.08pm Claudia's phone switched off, with later investigations showing that this was done deliberately. In the evening, she was scheduled to meet her friend Suzy Cooper but didn't turn up. Her friend Suzy continued trying to contact Claudia, but with no luck she contacted Claudia's father Peter Lawrence, who went round to the house with a spare key to check on his daughter. Peter then entered Claudia's home using his own key in company with George Forman. The two men found the house to be in an orderly state. The bed was made and there were unwashed dishes in the kitchen sink, suggesting she had eaten breakfast. Lawrence's handbag containing her purse, bank cards and passport was in the house. The North Yorkshire Police (NYP) was contacted at around 2:00 pm on 20 March in order to report Lawrence as a missing person.
Additional Details:
Within five weeks, after pressure from the family and lack of any trace, the case was upgraded to suspected murder. The independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers offered a reward of £10,000 to anyone providing information which would lead to the arrest and conviction of any person linked to the disappearance. NYP received over 1,200 calls offering information. An appeal for help was made by John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York. In early June 2009, a reconstruction of Lawrence's last known movements was featured in an appeal on BBC One's Crimewatch. Also in June, 100 days after his daughter went missing, Peter Lawrence launched a YouTube appeal for information. In September 2009, NYP revealed that the search for Lawrence had been extended to Cyprus. Detective Superintendent Ray Galloway stated that Lawrence "knew several people who live on the island" and that she may have "received job offers" while there. The MCU subsequently assessed the Lawrence case and carried out new forensic searches at her home on Heworth Road. In July 2014, NYP arrested Paul Harris, the landlord of The Acomb pub (since renamed as The Clockhouse pub) in York on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Harris was quickly released without charge. He complained that the police had excavated a section of the cellar floor of his pub. Harris stated that Lawrence had been a customer at his pub in the weeks before her disappearance and he had spoken to her, but stated that was his only connection with her. In 2014, police revealed further CCTV showing a astravan parked outside Claudia's home around 9 pm on the night of her disappearance. In 2015, police released CCTV footage of an unidentified man walking nearby to the alleyway at the rear of Claudia's home on 18 March 2009 at 7:15 pm and 19 March 2009 at 5:07 am/5:50 am. In 2013 a Major Crimes Unit reviewed Claudia's case in the hopes of finding new evidence using forensic techniques which would not have been available in 2009. This included conducting DNA testing on a cigarette that had been found in her car. They found that the cigarette had been handled by and unidentified male. They also uncovered multiple fingerprints in her car which had not been picked up on prior to this point. In January 2017, North Yorkshire Police took the decision to scale back the investigation and to move into a "reactive" phase. In June 2019, ten years after Claudia's disappearance, the Government introduced the Guardianship (Missing Person's) Act 2017, informally known as 'Claudia's Law'. The most recent and intensive search activity was conducted in August 2021 at Sand Hutton gravel pits. Claudia's father Peter passed away in February 2021, without ever knowing what happened to her. The 11-episode podcast 'Answers for Claudia' was released over 2024, with three new episodes in 2025. In the most recent episode, host Tom McDermott claims, "People of significant interest who have perhaps not felt comfortable to speak for over a decade, perhaps even 16 years have come forward. And we passed that new information on to the police." Nine arrests have been made but no charges undertaken over Claudia's disappearance. The investigation is one of the largest North Yorkshire Police has undertaken - with thousands of interviews, statements and searches - and received extensive media attention.
