On August 21, 2009, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Rose Marie Bly left her home in the 2300 block of River Road in rural St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. She told her husband she was going to meet a cousin at a bar in Cushing, Wisconsin, approximately 4-5 miles away, and said she would be home by midnight. She was driving a white 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with Wisconsin license plate 535MAB. She never arrived at her destination in Cushing. Her husband reported her missing on August 22, 2009. On August 26, 2009, her vehicle was discovered in a parking lot near the post office in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, approximately 30 miles from her home and 15 miles from her intended destination in Cushing. The parking lot is typically used by semi-truck drivers to park tractor-trailers. The vehicle was undamaged, the keys were missing, and there was no evidence of foul play. Bly had fallen off a horse a week before her disappearance and was experiencing headaches, though there is no confirmed evidence this was related to her disappearance.

Bly's husband passed a polygraph examination and was not considered a suspect in her disappearance. He filed for divorce three weeks after her disappearance and sought a court order to prevent her from taking their two infant daughters. The couple had married in February 2009 and their relationship had been troubled, with police being called to intervene in at least one domestic violence incident prior to her disappearance. His divorce petition was granted in 2010, and he received sole custody of their daughters. Bly had no credit or debit cards and left home with very little money. The Polk County Sheriff's Office has received hundreds of tips over the years and interviewed more than 150 people in connection with the case. In 2019, marking the 10th anniversary of her disappearance, the Sheriff's Office released a video and established a dedicated tip line to reinvigorate the investigation and generate new leads. The case remains an active, ongoing investigation. Bly has family living in Grantsburg and graduated from Grantsburg High School.
